As we all know, bringing all-solid-state lithium batteries into market still has a long way for human being to go, but every step forward is of great significance. Recently, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Science and Technology of China have introduced a novel potential-gated polymer (P(EO2-S3)) that effectively integrates reversible ion transport and storage, significantly enhancing the performance of solid-state batteries. And researchers from Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOP, CAS) have also developed a new anion regulation technology, remarkably giving a good answer to the problem of poor intimate contact between the electrolyte and lithium electrode in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries and providing crucial technical support for all-solid-state lithium batteries’ practical application.

It’s not just Chinese researchers who try so hard to conquer the blue sea of all-solid-state lithium batteries, but those enterprises who have seen the potential of all-solid-state batteries also show their desire to be the first to bring solid-state tech into market.

Mercedes and BMW are already testing prototypes on public roads, while Nio already offers what it calls a semi-solid-state battery in its ET5 and ET7 models in China. Nio’s ETs possess remarkable 360 watt hours per kilogram energy density, while the BMW i7 solid-state prototype has an even higher energy density of 390 Wh/kg. Toyota plans to sell its first production to get solid-state batteries in 2027 or 2028, which is suggested to be a hybrid, instead of a full EV.
